DIFFUSER SILENCERS
A multi-year Research and Development program for vent and blowdown silencers continues to reap results for Burgess-Manning and its customers. In the first years of the 21st Century, a need was recognized in numerous industries for a more compact, less expensive silencing solution to the venting of high pressure gas and steam to the atmosphere. Whether the need is intermittent, as in the emergency blow-downs for gas compression facilities, or longer term, such as the start-up and shut-down steam vent cycles at municipal power generation facilities, silencers play an important part in safe site operations.
Traditional designs for such silencers significant quantities of sound absorbent material, and generously sized components for flow area of near-atmospheric air, gas, or steam. Although effective from an acoustical standpoint, the size and weight of these designs carried a heavy penalty in transportation, erection, and initial capital cost.
Burgess-Manning’s research into this problem led to the development of what is now a patented Micro Diffusion® silencer design, which employs uniquely designed inlet components that prevent the creation of noise, rather than focusing on the absorption of noise that was previously allowed to propagate in an uncontrolled fashion. This innovative methodology is the basis of the TH line of vent silencers.
The result is a variety of vent and blowdown silencers that offer savings due to reductions in size and weight, plus superior acoustical performance. In addition to providing advantages for atmospheric venting, the same principles have been applied to in-line (non-vented) applications where pressure drops are the source of valve or piping noise. Also, recycle and vent lines on plant air compressors are well served by the patented diffuser technology.
These innovative products have proven themselves in field conditions, and are available now for your next project. In addition, our R&D program is still on-going, with the promise for more valuable designs to come.
