The establishment of Burgess-Manning and its product development are a direct result of the pioneering efforts of the late Dr. C. F. Burgess.
Dr. Burgess (pictured at right) was a prolific inventor with wide-ranging research interests that included the fields of electrical, acoustical, metallurgical, and aeronautical engineering. Among his innovative achievements from 1910 to 1945 were the development of the dry cell battery, the microswitch, and acoustical silencing devices.
The standards and philosophy of this man and the preceding organizations are still the driving forces of the company today.
The following is a brief history:
- 1910 Dr. C. F. Burgess established Northern Chemical Engineering Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin.
- 1920 The Burgess Battery Company is founded to commercially develop the dry cell technology.
- 1928 The Acoustical division of the Burgess Battery Company is formed to commercially market acoustical ceiling tiles developed by Burgess Laboratories.
- 1930 The silencing snubber principle is developed and is followed by the introduction of industrial silencers for application on engines, blowers, and vacuum pumps. The Burgess 'Straight Through' muffler is adopted and used by 13 automobile manufacturers.
- 1945 Pulsation Snubbers are introduced for use on reciprocating compressors for control of pulsation induced vibrations.
- 1964 The Process Separation market is entered with designs to separate solid and liquid particles from a gas stream.
- 1967 Burgess-Manning purchases the Centrifix Corporation (a supplier of separation equipment founded in 1925). The product lines and technology are incorporated within the existing Burgess products.
- 1969 A patented Vane Separator is introduced. This becomes an industry standard, forming the nucleus of the company separator line.
- 1973 A new concept in high velocity vent silencing is introduced (DA series).
- 1976 The Tuyere is developed for pipeline scrubbing applications.
- 1982 The separation range is extended by the addition of the 'ULTRASEP' Coalescing Filter Separator.
- 1985 Digital acoustical analysis for pulsation/vibration control of compressor systems is introduced.
- 1986 Patent obtained for high efficiency Vertical Vane (Model 627).
- 1989 Axial cyclone added to the company's standard cyclone product line.
- 1990 Burgess-Manning purchases Quietflo Engineering Ltd, complimenting the silencer division, adding water/sewage control to the company's product line.
- 1992 New compact separator design for floating production facilities.
- 1993 Burgess-Manning purchases Skimovex, specialists in waste water treatment including oily water, industrial effluent, and ground water treatment equipment.
- 1996 "Industry first" - successful installation/operation of combination vane/tuyere high turndown mist eliminator.
- 1998 "Industry first" - successful installation/operation of combination vane/multicyclone high turndown mist eliminator.
- 2001 Patent obtained for new design of aeroderivative gas turbine silencer, using proprietary "SSF Technology".
- 2003 Patent applied for "TH" design vent/blowdown silencer using "Advanced Micro-Diffusion".
- 2004 Introduction of new silencer lines: - Reciprocating Engines - Positive Displacement Blower and Vacuum Pumps.
